The rapid growth of energy demand and increasing environmental concerns has led governments and organizations worldwide to explore sustainable and renewable energy sources. Among various renewable energy alternatives, solar energy has emerged as one of the most promising solutions due to its abundance, eco-friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. In the transportation sector, railway stations are massive consumers of electricity for daily operations such as lighting, ventilation, ticketing, and passenger amenities. Transitioning to solar power offers significant advantages in reducing operating expenses and carbon footprint. This study examines the adoption, operational benefits, and challenges associated with solar energy implementation in railway stations.

Energy is one of the most essential resources for economic development and technological progress. Modern societies rely heavily on electrical energy to power industries, transport systems, commercial establishments, and domestic activities. However, the conventional methods of energy generation, which primarily depend on fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, have led to severe environmental degradation, global warming, and resource depletion.
The transportation sector is one of the largest consumers of energy. Railways, in particular, require significant amounts of electricity to maintain stations, power signaling systems, and operate passenger facilities. The adoption of solar energy in railway stations not only reduces electricity costs but also contributes to environmental preservation by lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Railway stations possess expansive rooftops, platform sheds, and open areas suitable for solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, making them ideal candidates for renewable energy transition.
